Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain, is known for his rough playing style and ending songs by smashing his guitar. Guitar techs were constantly recycling parts from smashed guitars to repair/rebuild Kurt’s guitars. Although a left-handed guitar player, he was also seen playing right-handed  guitars, however they were strung for a left-handed player and he played them upside down. Quoted as saying the Fender Mustang was his favorite guitar, he played several other types including Fender Strats, Telecasters and 2 different custom-made guitars.

Cobain preferred a Fender Mustang and his use of this guitar helped to make the Mustang wildly popular in the 90s grunge scene after being re-released as a result of the vintage movement at the time. The Fender Mustang has two single coil pickups with an unusual switching configuration. Shared on with the Jag-Stang, the Mustang has a unique tremolo arm. Kurt owned several of these guitars, the most famous of them being the left-handed ’69 Lake Placid Blue “competition” Mustang he played in Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit Video.”

During the Nevermind era, Kurt mainly used a 1965 Sunburst Fender Jaguar with a red swirl mother-of-bowling ball pickguard, 2 volume knobs, 1 tone knob, and a black shrome Schaller bridge. The Jaguar was originally made popular during the surf music scene and, like the Mustang, found a new following in the 90s grunge scene. The Fender Jaguar has an off-set waist and a floating tremolo. Kurt Cobain had a few Jaguars and played his ‘65 in the “Lithium” video. The same ’65 Fender Jaguar can be seen in the Hole video “Doll Parts” being played by Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson.

Kurt enjoyed the Fender Mustang and Jaguar so well, Fender later collaborated with him for a custom guitar, the Jag-Stang. Cobain literally cut apart a picture of each guitar, repositioned them together, and sent a copy to Fender. Like its name implies, the Jag-Stang is a combination of the Fender Mustang and Jaguar. It has a Mustang-style short scale neck with the body style a combo of both. It also has a Dimarizio humbucking pickup at the bridge and a Texas Special single coil at the neck. With the popularity of Nevermind and the In Utero tour approaching, Cobain was able to custom create a guitar just for him.

The Jag-Stang was not Cobain’s first custom-built guitar collaboration. He also collaborated with luthier Danny Ferrington to create a custom left-handed guitar based on a Fender Mustang. Referred to as the Ferrington guitar, it used a Gibson-stly bridge to help keep it in tune, was built with a straighter neck to withstand his rougher playing style, and had heart shaped fret board dot inlays. Ferrington and Cobain created this guitar through various faxes back and forth while Nirvana toured for Nevermind.

Although Cobain preferred the Mustang and Jaguar, he was a fan of all Fenders and played several Fender Stratocasters and Telecasters. The Fender Strat is a classic and is among the most common models. Kurt preferred the Japanese model because of its smaller frets. The Fender Stratocaster is a double cut-away guitar built to be played standing up, which is why it has an extended top-horn. He owned several of these and was seen playing them throughout his career. He played a white Strat at the MTV awards and later smashed it at the Seattle Center during a show. Another smashed black Strat used while recording Nevermind now resides at a Hard Rock Café. During the In Utero tour Cobain has several Mexican Stratocasters used mainly for smashing. Kurt’s other Fender favorite was the Telecaster. He owned 2 of these dual-pickup, solid bodied guitars, a blue Telecaster and a Sunburst Telecaster Custom. The custom Telecaster was a favorite before his suicide and is famous for having “’heart’ Courtney” scratched into it.

With the huge success of Nevermind, Kurt Cobain was able to experiment with different guitars and able to afford the best. However, that was not always the case. On the first Nirvana album and tour, Bleach, Cobain used a vintage Univox Hi-Flier. The Hi-flier was a thin bodied guitar with a reverse strat-style and a bolt on neck. It has 22 frets on a rose wood fret board and a 3-way pickup select. Cobain owned several of these guitars and used them exclusively on the recording of Bleach.

Kurt Cobain started out Nirvana with a simple, muddy playing style that combined with raw lyrics rallied a generation of angsty, flannel-wearing, social cast-offs. None of which would have been possible without his weapon of choice, the guitar.
